How did David win God’s heart in spite of his failings?

David is one of the Bible's most iconic figures, and he was the founder of a lasting dynasty that would lead up to Jesus Christ.

However, David was also a very flawed person. He did things that even pagan kings would scoff at, and his family broke apart because of his actions. Why did God support him despite all this?
