The Mekong is the longest river in Southeast Asia, the seventh longest in Asia, and the 12th longest in the world. Because it provides abundant natural resources, people have lived in the Mekong region for more than 4,000 years. Cambodia and Vietnam are the two countries most dependent on the Mekong River. Between 70-80 percent of the population of these two countries relies heavily on Mekong river fish as their main source of protein.
