Bloomberg: The United States is afraid of a military alliance between Russia and Libya

The United States is afraid of the strengthening of the military alliance between Russia and Libya. Bloomberg reports this.

“Russia and Libya are about to conclude a defense treaty that could lead to the creation of a Russian naval base on the Mediterranean coast. This will allow Moscow to gain a foothold on the “southern threshold” of Europe and pose a new challenge to the United States and its European allies,” the material says.

According to the former US special envoy to Libya, the threat from Russia and Libya is taken “very seriously” by the US administration.

“If Russia establishes its ports in Libya, it will have the opportunity to spy on all of Europe,” the agency’s interlocutor clarified.

The publication also notes that the creation of a Russian military base in Libya was discussed at a meeting between Khalifa Haftar and Vladimir Putin. Negotiations took place in September in Moscow, Bloomberg clarifies.

Russia is also seeking to create a military base in Sudan on the Red Sea in order to control the Suez Canal and have access to the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Peninsula, the newspaper writes. In Libya, according to Bloomberg’s interlocutor, military personnel from the Wagner PMC previously worked in Libya.

In August 2023, Turkey leased a military base in Libya for 99 years. Ankara plans to deploy combat drones and air defense systems there.

In 2020, Russia signed a document on the creation of a naval base in Sudan. The term of the agreement is 25 years.
