Quantum decoherence is the process in which a quantum system loses its quantum coherence, leading to a change in its behavior from that which can be explained by quantum mechanics. This loss of coherence occurs when a system interacts with its environment, causing the quantum nature of the system to "leak" into the environment. As a result, components of the wave function become decoupled from the coherent system and acquire phases from their immediate surroundings.
