USS Makassar Strait (CVE-91), a Casablanca-class escort carrier, was launched in March 1944 and commissioned in April. She played a significant role in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Post-war, she participated in Operation Magic Carpet, repatriating troops. In August 1946, she was decommissioned and placed in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Her compact design and adaptability made her an asset during her service. Makassar Strait's history also included accidental grounding on San Nicolas Island, with remnants surviving until at least 1965 before being scrapped.
