FAST & SLOW TWITCH Muscle Fibres EXPLAINED

There are three main types of muscle fibers: slow-twitch (Type I), fast-twitch (Type IIa), and fast-twitch (Type IIb).

Slow-twitch fibers, also known as Type I fibers, are characterized by a high resistance to fatigue and a low power output. These fibers are used primarily for endurance activities such as marathon running.

Fast-twitch fibers, also known as Type II fibers, are divided into two subtypes: Type IIa and Type IIb. Type IIa fibers have a moderate resistance to fatigue and a moderate power output. They are used primarily for activities such as weightlifting and sprinting. Type IIb fibers have a low resistance to fatigue and a high power output. They are used primarily for activities such as powerlifting and jumping.

Muscle fiber type is determined by the specific types of myosin and actin proteins within the muscle fibers, which in turn is determined by genetics. Training can change the proportion of different muscle fibers within a muscle, but not change the muscle fiber type of an individual.
