Heresy is deviation from established and accepted religious truth that undermines moral authority. It is usually used within a Christian, Jewish, or Islamic context, and implies slightly different meanings in each. Heresy is distinct from apostasy, which is when someone completely renounces their religion. Blasphemy is doing or saying something disrespectful towards God or sacred things. In Islam, apostasy, renouncing faith altogether, is treason against God. It can result in being put to death under Sharia law. The study of heresy is called heresiology. A heresiarch is the founder or leader of a heretical movement, and a heretic is someone who follows or commits heresy. Heresy has plagued Christianity since the early days of the religion. It is one of the reasons that the Church formed an organized structure in the centuries after the death of Jesus.
