Bakersfield City School District's migrant program hosts "Dia de Los Muertos" event

Bakersfield Police are investigating after one person was stabbed in east Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon. Police say they got the call at about 3 p.m. and arrived at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on California Avenue to find one victim of a stabbing. The victim had moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The Kern County Sheriff's Office is investigating after an inmate at their Central Receiving Facility died in their cell. KCSO says the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at around 12:22 p.m. on Saturday. Deputies tried saving the inmate's life, with help from Hall Ambulance and the Bakersfield Fire Department, but the inmate was pronounced dead. The BCSD Migrant Education Program hosted its Third Annual "Día de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) Cultural Event for Migrant Students and their families. Hundreds of people of all ages showed up to take part in the event.  It included student musical performances, student art displays, theatrical performances by Los Angeles based "Teatro del Barrio."  Parents were also invited to speak and share about their own traditions associated with the celebration such as altars, sugar skulls and piñatas. Children also got to check out a pumpkin patch and were invited to participate in a costume contest parade complete with a trunk-or-treat activity.
