California Kid banned over black face

A California middle-school student faced suspension for alleged "blackface" at a local football game, while a national civil rights organization argued it was merely eye paint.

The eighth-grader, identified as J.A. for privacy, was photographed at a football game between La Jolla High School and Morse High School on October 13, sporting dark face paint on his cheeks and chin, as reported by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE).

The boy's father recounted a trouble-free and enjoyable evening, and even mentioned a black security guard who encouraged his son to apply more face paint.

However, a week after the game, Muirland Middle School's principal called for a meeting with J.A. and his parents, announcing a two-day suspension and a ban from future athletic events.

A disciplinary notice accused J.A. of "painting his face black at a football game" and labeled it an "offensive comment with intent to harm."

Principal Jeff Luna also cited the offensiveness of the face paint, attributing it to Morse High School's predominantly black student population, according to Cal Coast News.
