Icelandic Town Messes With Drivers With This 3D Crosswalk

Illusion art is not a new fad, but towns all over the world have been using it on their streets to convey a very important message: SLOW THE HELL DOWN!

In the small fishing town of Ísafjörður, Iceland, an exciting development in road safety has almost literally popped up. They painted a pedestrian crossing to look like the bars are floating above the ground, making for a very clever and detailed optical illusion.

It gives pedestrians the feel of walking on air, but its more important role is getting the attention of drivers, who will definitely slow down when they spot the zebra stripes that look like they are floating a few inches above the ground!

Icelandic environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla called for its placement in Ísafjörður after seeing a similar project being carried out in New Delhi, India. He was searching for creative ideas to to slow down traffic and with the help of street painting company Vegmálun GÍH, his vision became a reality. They experimented on the technique to perfect it, before giving it a permanent placement in this old town.
