The Parisian actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was the single most influential figure in Alphonse Mucha’s life as an artist. It was his first poster for her, Gismonda in 1894, that made him famous. He grew both as a man and an artist through his professional collaboration and friendship with the most famous stage personality of the era. Bernhardt was an artist herself, and friend to Oscar Wilde, although abandoned him upon his exile to France. The posters of Mucha (1860-1939) would influence the entire poster genre, including movie posters today.
