Chhath Puja is a major Hindu festival celebrated in Bihar.
It is also known as Surya Shashthi.
This festival is mainly celebrated in the North Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Terai areas of Nepal.
Chhath Puja is the ritual of worshiping Sun God and Chhathi Maiya and offering Arghya to them.
Chhath Puja is a strict and spiritual ritual lasting four days. In this festival, Arghya is offered to the rising and setting sun. The festival of Chhath is celebrated twice a year.
The tradition of Chhath Puja is associated with the Mahabharata period. According to mythology, Suryaputra Karna is believed to be related to Bhagalpur in Bihar. It is believed that Chhath Puja was also performed by Karna, the son of Lord Surya and king of Anga country.
According to religious belief, Mother Sita had first performed the first Chhath puja on the banks of Ganga in Munger, Bihar, after which the great festival started. Chhath festival has special significance in Munger, Bihar.
