Asphalt is a series of racing video games developed and published by Gameloft. The games in the series primarily focus on fast-paced arcade racing set in various locations around the world. Players are tasked with completing races while avoiding the local law enforcement in thrilling police pursuits.
The first game in the series, Asphalt: Urban GT, was released in 2004 for the Nintendo DS and N-Gage, with simplified versions for mobile phones. Subsequent games were developed for various platforms, with the latest main installment being Asphalt 9: Legends in 2018. The series also includes spinoffs like Asphalt Overdrive, an endless runner game, Asphalt Nitro, a minimal version designed for low-end devices with procedural generation, Asphalt Xtreme, an off-road-centric entry, and Asphalt Street Storm, a drag racing game.
The series offers fast-paced, arcade-style street racing similar to Need for Speed, incorporating elements from other racing games like Burnout. The spinoff game Asphalt Xtreme introduces an off-road racing setting, featuring open-wheel buggies, sport-utility vehicles, and rally cars instead of supercars. Each game in the series allows players to drive licensed sports cars from various manufacturers, ranging from entry-level models like the Dodge Dart GT to high-performance supercars like the Bugatti Veyron. Concept cars like Mercedes-Benz's Biome design study are also included.[1]
Police chases are a recurring gameplay element, particularly in the early games, but were later de-emphasized in favor of stunt jumps and aerobatic maneuvers. However, police chases made a comeback in Overdrive and Nitro, combining elements from Airborne and previous games in the series.
Throughout the games, players gradually unlock access to different race courses, many of which are modeled after real-world locations and major cities. They can also upgrade their vehicles using money earned in races or, in later games, points or real currency through in-app purchases. The events become progressively more challenging as players advance, sometimes requiring them to complete bonus challenges such as taking down a certain number of opponent racers or finishing a race without damaging their vehicle.
Asphalt 8: Airborne, the eighth main installment and tenth overall title, received critical acclaim upon its release in 2013 for iOS, Android, Windows, and Blackberry platforms. It quickly became one of the top-selling games on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. Asphalt Nitro, the twelfth title in the series, was quietly released on Gameloft's app store in May 2015 for Android. Additionally, a 2.5D J2ME version of the game was made available for feature phones. One of Nitro's main selling points was its small resource footprint, achieved through the use of procedural generation.[5]
