Is the brain on our side or does it take pleasure in creating lies about our thoughts, feelings, and actions?

When we find ourselves in a never-ending cycle of negative thoughts, it’s because emotional pain lasts far longer than physical pain. In fact, our brains have this very unique ability to create suffering on demand.

But why would the brain even do this to us? Wouldn’t it rather have us experience inner peace, happiness, and mindfulness?

The brain thrives on negative thinking as it observes the world around us. While this ability only does more harm than good in modern day, it was incredibly beneficial for our ancestors. Negative thinking is what allowed them to quickly perceive threats and take action. It was a necessary survival skill.

Your brain never tells you the truth because it doesn't see the truth.

Today, wild animals are not our usual threat, but self-comparison can be as we scroll through our Facebook newsfeed. For example, if we get zero ‘likes’ on a post, our brain is automatically trained to see that as a threat to our ego.

As our brain presents us with negative thoughts, we can either accept or ignore them. By training our brain, we can see past its lies and discover the truth.

When in doubt, ask your brain if what it's telling you is true. This will help you train the brain to differentiate between fact and fiction.

Rather than automatically focusing on the threats in our life, we can teach our brain to focus on the blessings.
