How to fix the elusive HP M 2 mounting screw problem

HP uses a very elusive M.2 mounting screw mechanism in their computers. Not only is it a very uncommong 1.6mm thread, trying to find a wide pancake head screw with a standoff of this thread size is almost impossible. So, when the HP M.2 mounting screw is lost, or perhaps the screw threads are stripped, it is difficult to find replacement parts to correct the problem. This is true for the HP Z Turbo Drive that I unlock and sell in my eBay store, as well as for the HP Thin Client computers and many other HP computers. I've seen several threads at the HP forums where people were searching to replace this elusive M.2 mounting screw without much success.

In this video, I'm going to show you a way to remedy this problem. A more common M.2 mounting screw stand-off uses a 2.0mm thread size. Since this is larger than the 1.6mm that HP uses, one can simply drill out the 1.6mm threads and tap 2.0mm threads to make use of the commonly available 2.0mm M.2 mount stand-offs. I will demonstrate how I do this on HP Z Turbo Drives that have stripped out screw threads.

For those interested in doing this, here are the specs for the commonly available 2.0mm threaded M.2 stand-offs:

Thread size: 2.0mm
Thread length: 2.5mm
Stand-off nut thickness: 2.5mm
Full height: 5.6mm

The above specified M.2 mounting stand-offs are commonly used for ASUS motherboards, so that might help you search for it.
