The North American F-100 Super Sabre was designed as a replacement for the highly-successful F-86 Sabre JET FIGHTER, and was first flown in 1953. The main thrust of the replacement aim was to achieve a higher-performance fighter jet for the US Air Force (USAF), and specifically to be capable of supersonic speed in level flight. In addition to being a pure FIGHTER AIRCRAFT, the F100 also evolved into an effective fighter bomber and saw extensive service during the Vietnam War, before its final retirement in 1979. Today’s AVIATION ART release depicts an F100 Super Sabre in its heyday high above the American West Coast.
