On Thursday, Israel began its newly-implemented, daily pauses in northern Gaza to allow humanitarian aid into the region and to enable at-danger Palestinians and foreign nationals to flee for safety amid recent Israeli attacks.

“There will be two humanitarian corridors… the first such corridor open between four and five hours every day,” said U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel, adding that the pause has already “enabled many thousands of people” to escape and more than 100 aid-filled trucks to enter.

The pauses come after U.S. President Joe Biden called for pauses that would last at least three days.

Palestinian officials in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said 10,569 people — 40 per cent of whom had been children — had been killed as of Wednesday, while Israel says 33 of its soldiers have been killed since Oct. 7.
