Episode 1637: Why did Lots wife look back?

Why is it that when Christ said “Come follow me” to the apostles they did just that? They all had lives. They were fathers, husbands and business men. Why in the world did Christ chose them and why in the world did they just drop everything to follow him? Because they knew everything else in their lives was meaningless compared to Christ and so they followed and let Christ take care of everything else. They simply followed.

Now here is my tie in with Lots wife. A friend of mine asked why was it a woman that God chose to turn to stone? Why didn’t lot himself turn to stone.

Well because lot didn’t turn around. What's that represent. Very simply it means she struggled to put away her past life in Sodom and Gamora. Although she may have not lived as the inhabitants but she had an attachment to that place and so she looked back to get one last look see.

Don’t we do that? Don’t we have certain attachments of this world that do nothing to serve Christ but yet we want them we play with them we have an attachment.

Why did lots wife look back and not lot or the others? Because like when Christ said come follow me the apostles had a choice, follow or look back.

Matthew, chapter 8, verse 22. Jesus is speaking to a man who wants to follow him but first needs to bury his father. Jesus says, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead." What did he mean? we should not be distracted by worldly concerns when we are following God and focus on living our lives to the fullest.

Lot's wife looking back and being turned to stone demonstrates the dangers of attachment to the material world. Lot's wife was so attached to her home and possessions in Sodom that she could not bear to leave them behind, even when God was leading her to safety. As a result, she was turned to a pillar of salt as a punishment for her disobedience. Our faith teaches that we should not be too attached to the things of this world, because they are fleeting and ultimately meaningless. We should instead focus on our relationship with God and on building a life that is pleasing to Him.

The story of Lot's wife is often used as a metaphor for the dangers of nostalgia and regret. When we look back on the past with longing, it can prevent us from moving forward and embracing the present. We should learn from Lot's wife's mistake and focus on building a future that is full of hope and promise.

St. Augustine: Lot's wife represents those who are attached to the world and its pleasures. When she looks back, she is symbolically turning away from God and towards sin.

St. Bonaventure: Lot's wife represents those who are blinded by their own desires. She is unable to see the truth of God's plan for her life because she is so focused on the material world.

When I post the podcast I post especially the Evergentino and ladder of divine ascent what do we hear constantly from the church fathers. Live the faith and don’t just practice it and also don’t waste your time since your life is so fleeting on the concerns of this world. Build a daily life of prayer and devotion and put your secondary needs second. After I do my daily podcast and go to church in the morning as I leave the Church I say “I give yo my first and best fruits Lord please make my day both productive but especially help me to lead others to you."

We are a community of believers and so we need each other. We all fall and so we need the reinforcements from others but if those others are too busy being focused on all the distractions of this world they aren’t much help to us are they. So from time to time we must go it alone as Lot had to once he lost his wife. Why do they not provide the name of lots wife? Many more modern women would say because in those days it was very male centric and they intentionally didn’t mention her name. But that’s not true. Many woman are named in both the old and new testament. Its because in order to show she is us they leave it out. We are like lots wife and we all look back with a fancy of either this world or the sins we hold because of this world.

I will get people say to me “I can't make your rosary tonight or your novena devotion this week” I remind them they are not mine they are all of ours. What they really mean to say is that I always have something more to do than that for Christ. They are always putting their worldly matters ahead of Christ and in essence they are all lots wife.

So, start today. Just grab your liturgical calendar and learn who the saint of the day is or the commemoration and write next to their name “what am I doing for Christ today”. Every single one of us has an apostolate in them. Find yours and move forward and let the dead (this world) bury the dead. Don’t become salt but rather the light of Christ.

God bless!
