Earthquakes are natural phenomena that occur due to the sudden release of energy within the Earth's lithosphere, resulting in seismic waves. They can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities.

The Earth's lithosphere is divided into several rigid tectonic plates that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. Earthquakes often occur at the boundaries of these plates, known as fault lines, where the plates are moving past, away from, or toward each other. The point within the Earth where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the point directly above it on the surface is called the epicenter.
