Addressing MPs and peers in the House of Lords in what was the first King's Speech in more than 70 years, he spoke of the 'legacy of service and devotion' of his 'beloved mother'. Whilst George VI spoke amid Britain's involvement in the Korean War in his final State Opening of Parliament in 1950, Charles spoke - in words written by ministers - of the Government's priority to 'make the difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better.' In paying tribute to his mother, the King was following in the footsteps of the Queen herself, who spoke warmly of her father when she opened Parliament for the first time in November 1952.
