What "Expert" Therapists Do: Core Tasks of Psychotherapy

Following a consideration of the narrative perspective, Dr. Meichenbaum will examine the ingredients and activities of "expert" therapist. A variety of core tasks will be considered including the development of therapeutic alliance, psychoeducation, nurturing hope, teaching skills and building in generalization, as well as ways to foster self-attributions and conduct relapse prevention. But these "core tasks" must be supplemented for the 50% of the psychiatric population who have a history of victimization. Videotape case presentations that illustrate the value of a Case Conceptualization Model will be offered. In short, who are the best psychotherapists/counsellors in your area and what makes them so good?

Educational Objectives:
1) Examine the ingredients and activities of the “expert” therapist.
2) Explore a variety of core tasks, such as therapeutic alliance, psychoeducation, nurturing hope and teaching skills.
3) Learn about the value of a Case Conceptualization Model through the use of videotape case presentations.
