I have so much respect for Johnny. Being an engineer in this type of situation would be so unbelievably stressful.

One of the best vocalists across all genres, certainly one of the most unique voices ever. When Aaron opens his mouth I’m completely consumed by the nostalgia feelings all GenXers feel from his music.

This video really shows that band is like a marriage and after 16 years things get complicated and that’s natural, but noticing weariness in the eyes of each member made me really said. Everything ends so as the times of good bands and good music. Thank you for the songs and records you’ve given to us!

This dude has no idea what his music has meant to me. Growing up with all kind of shit around me, his music has helped alot. I know countless of people has probably said that, but yeah.. Love this guy!

I absolutely love this band and Aaron Lewis has been my hero since I was around 12 years old. A friend of mine went to a Staind concert and was able to get his hands on a Tormented album. He played "Mudshuvel" for me and I was instantly addicted. As a teenager, my wall was full of Staind posters, tons of Staind Tshirts, anticipated the release of every new album and kept up with current events.
Their music has helped me get through some shitty times in my life, the worst being the death of my father when I was 14 and struggling with heroin addiction.
One of my favorite past times is sitting here with my daughter watching videos of Aaron Lewis playing live acoustic shows. She's only 12 months, but she loves Staind already.

Hearing Aaron talk about the kid who died by suicide to Outside is really heartbreaking...

I miss Staind, but that being their last album really made it magical. It's like they will forever be a nostalgic band.

So fascinating that during recording this appeared to be the end of Staind and it ended up being their best album since Break the Cycle.

I can't stand when a lot of people say that Staind were going shitty after Dysfunction. I find Break The Cycle and even 14 Shades Of Grey to be great Staind albums, based on opinion, I think Break The Cycle is one of their very best records and it was the one that got me into Staind.

Seems like the 10 year break was needed but I'm so hyped and happy to have them come back. And that Heavy Staind is keeping strong with the new album so far

Staind, is and will always be that raw, open and most honest bands out there. Aaron you will find homoeostasis in everything, because you are balanced, you just don't know it yet. I love ya, no matter what kind of music you come out with because it's you and because you find solace in what you do. Aaron your voice sounds indestructible, and amazing!! I must say perfection buddy! You need more than respect, and dont listen to the haters, those misrible fucks are battery lickin peices of meat

I've really I've come to the conclusion that if you are successful in the music
0:11
business you have somehow sold out we
0:20
have stayed more true to ourselves than than anybody could have asked us to the
0:34
original fanbase would argue that break the cycle is big of a record as it was was the beginning of the end of us you
0:42
know being represented as a heavy band a
0:49
lot of people that know us from the radio are quite taken aback when they come and see us play live and you know
0:56
that's part of the whole thing that was created by the record label and by what
1:01
radio on it from us and I always felt like it was a misrepresentation of what
1:06
Staind was as a whole so this is the perfect opportunity for stains to
1:18
I feel like this is the opportunity for staind to get back to where we were at
1:26
in the beginning where all we wanted to do is [ __ ] write heavy songs and just [ __ ] kick people's [ __ ] teeth down
1:32
their throat
1:49
so we decided we were going to start the record early December before we did that we really had to put the studio together
1:55
so Johnny K came up and we'd bought all this gear and you know spent almost a week I guess everything getting
2:01
everything together and started jamming on the ideas we broke right before
2:20
Christmas and at that point we had about I think about 18 songs we had put together in a couple of weeks and so
2:28
everybody took the break came back and started playing on it and kind of chose
2:34
the ones that we liked went through manic both Aaron and myself realized that we needed to make some changes just
2:39
some of them went through its song by song and started doing that and you know
2:44
started working on them on the last record Mike was using a lot of more standard tunings but originally stained
2:51
and most of the records were always played on baritone guitars and with you know down-tuned and drop tuned guitars
2:58
so Mike wanted to return to that and I think the band in general wanted to make
3:05
a heavier record what stain needs to do is to really focus on what first got
3:12
people into stayin which was a large portion of their audience a large
3:18
portion of their fan base came on board during the tour Matt did or disfunction
3:24
period I said go back to channeling that energy and make a record that is a hard
3:31
record and an honest record and challenge yourselves to do that I think yeah if you want to sound modern and for
3:38
us cool parts of transitions [ __ ] modern and progressive selling
3:46
stain the more popular records with the die-hard fans where there were the old
3:51
ones which one do you think is gonna incite more of a riot that's such
4:02
driving that's what I'm looking for I really wanted to get back to the
4:08
heavier side of the band and I think to
4:14
this point um that's what we're doing the fans have been calling for it and
4:20
they were in the mood to do it and that's that's how they that's what they set out to do
4:38
we tended to jam the songs out live get a vibe and allow the songs to develop
4:45
that way and that's not what happened
4:51
what am I even I don't even want to listen to see what I think the vibe
5:01
started out really good but it just fell apart quick right but that can't be
5:06
[ __ ] closed kid and that hated total it wasn't that it would tick tick maybe
5:13
it's just younger it was really difficult well I mean I my plate can't get him on
5:23
the drum for nothing but you start talking to think he's going to cover it
5:34
was difficult enough that we didn't we stopped doing it together and we started doing it on our own
5:40
signs of a long hard 15 years together
5:45
or whatever where you know you you're getting sick of each other bando buh-buh-buh-buh gang all right not
5:54
too many [ __ ] geniuses in here I know there's only one react we're all
6:00
actually complicating I think everybody's complicate it's not like just stayin is complicated I know people are complicated it takes you a while to
6:07
really get to know somebody you know I mean I've known these guys I think it's
6:12
been 16 years now I can't believe I'm in the band for 16 years I thought about that like two weeks girls I can't
6:18
believe I'm gonna be in for 16 years I've never done anything for 16 years actually think of a few things six but
6:23
for 60 it just kind of felt like I
6:28
playing as a band Justin seemed to really be be happened like that especially you know johnny was like you
6:35
know I think I think we need to kind of do this separately I was like please let's just not do we tried it it's not
6:40
working there's no magic in the room it was not no magic happening I couldn't pull the plug on that soon enough
6:47
because everyone came in with a good they came in with a good attitude and it
6:53
just slowly deteriorated it's the truth
7:31
you're sorry day
7:38
yes yes
7:46
this further from
7:53
in front of me
8:00
not again that was another song that I had I doubt I pretty much had together arranged and
8:08
I don't think much changed on that one that was one of the ones that I kind of brought in I worked on that one with
8:13
Johnny I think in Chicago and again came and we just started jamming on everybody you know everybody kind of liked it so
8:20
that what had been kind of sitting around for a minute I heard not again I said that's that's the track and it has
8:28
all the all the things in the one song that makes stayin the great group that
8:35
they are and when we zeroed in on that as the single and started playing it for
8:41
radio 100% across the board everyone was like this is exactly what we were hoping you would play for us and as we sit here
8:48
today end of July early August the song is the fastest climbing single that
8:54
stains ever had this one's a little more open seems like they're certainly not
9:02
single the chorus is not structured to be some it's really like thanks good melody and
9:11
what you just showed me for the pre-chorus I think it's fine too a little bit of space on the guitar I
9:18
think it's fine let the guitar do its thing sing in between school I don't
9:23
know I'll do it let me clear that [ __ ] off okay
9:38
we're here every
9:44
catch I sang the wrong with hers try
9:51
singing the first half of the verse more like the second half instead of takin staff instead of going Brett's is like
9:57
taking his stuff no no give it a little more voice a little less breath oh
10:02
alright [ __ ] put that in the DVD
10:07
right there that angry condescending
10:17
do you feel like yo I'm somebody's
10:24
father there's that you know I think you could I think you should look for an
10:31
opportunity to drop something that makes it a little more real in there it's all
10:37
it's all there don't don't [ __ ] don't doubt he knows I'm writing it's just
10:43
being lazy only how much I [ __ ] suck in between each take when nobody can hear cuz it's coming through my [ __ ]
10:49
ear phones yeah and go back and do your [ __ ] penis in your left click button
10:58
with your right condescending prick this
11:03
guy represent is there anything else you
11:09
want to do with a song that's it yeah let's go to it let's write another something something to remind you just
11:18
kind of one of those songs that just kind of
11:23
came like a tidal wave he changed it around a little bit you know just to suit what how he wanted to sing and I
11:32
you know came up with some great lyrics and I guess you know one take didn't just you know killed it I wrote it just
11:40
kind of listening to the pieces that I needed to listen to no playing the CD
11:47
and I thought well I got a reference and then I didn't go down CD because of the arrangement
11:53
yeah the road to hell along the way is
12:02
paved with good intentions so they say
12:07
in some believe that no Gundy
12:15
goes unpunished in the end or so
12:21
it seems so when the day comes and the
12:28
Sun won't touch my face tell the ones who care enough that I
12:36
finally left this place that's been so
12:43
cold look in my face oh the stories in
12:52
will tell I can't erase the road is long
13:00
just one more song a little something to
13:08
remind you when I'm gone when I'm gone
13:17
welcome to the party Erin was always
13:24
really good at I mean I think that's his claim to fame that's what he offers his
13:30
audience is his honesty is his take about what he feels and a lot of times
13:39
you know the way he says how he feels brings a chord among his audience the
13:47
fans appreciation of what it is that I do they
13:56
it means more to me in it in it and it helps me and it's helped me in my life
14:03
more than I could have ever possibly helped them in the words that I've said
14:12
you know I never set out to try to help anybody I still that's not my path all
14:25
these lyrics over the wood over the years all the things that I've said over the years of all have all been for me
14:34
they've all been to get it off of my chest and by accident that this is all
14:47
kind of happened the way that it has and
14:54
because I read all those letters that are handed to me I know that I have
15:00
inadvertently helped a lot of people
15:06
with what it is that I had to say too long to get it off my chest there was a
15:14
time period during turn break the cycle
15:20
I think kind of towards the end of it that I lost and I broke down i frickin
15:28
cried for like an hour I couldn't I
15:33
couldn't read any more stories I couldn't I couldn't read any more
15:41
letters I couldn't I couldn't handle it anymore I couldn't I didn't want to
15:50
carry that burden I didn't want that weight on my shoulders that's not what I was trying to do that's not and you know
15:58
the the letter that I had read that just completely sent me over the edge was
16:05
this kid wrote me a letter and his best friend had who never had any interest in
16:15
playing the guitar or singing or anything like that he went out he bought
16:21
himself a guitar he learned how to play outside and sing it he recorded himself
16:28
playing outside and singing it and then proceeded to hang himself to the song
16:34
playing on a loop so that when his parents found him they would hear him
16:39
singing outside and that was his suicide
16:46
note I guess if you will and
16:54
that's not i was never what that song was written for that's not it freaked me
17:03
out so bad it it really [ __ ] me up for a while
17:51
you failing was that that riff that it goes
17:59
into um I don't know to me it's I think it's like one of the heaviest rips that
18:04
I've ever written
18:11
you gotta be [ __ ] me best take my life write down the share should we do
18:18
that little lead into the bridge clean
18:26
is done
18:37
no-no-no
18:43
No self-serving plan just hey hey hey hey
18:51
toilet paper hey is like an itchy ask me
19:00
whoof wait a minute what part are we going into it though we're just doing a chorus I'm just I'm just informing you
19:14
so that you might but I do need to inform you that I am a professional musician I've done this a lot of time
19:19
I've recorded how many records now how it comes I'm in studio okay I know how
19:25
to play look click no 30 that's 33 milliseconds off the clip jesus H Christ
19:31
33 right well just so you know like a good a good that's a good day and
19:37
[ __ ] a good performance is usually within 5 or 10 knows that underlying
19:42
theme there you know if you show up and you're not putting your all in or if your heart isn't in it but it'll show
19:50
you go to him [ __ ] look at that [ __ ] look what he had to do to your [ __ ]
19:55
drums to make it [ __ ] decent enough for the record it's actually worse than
20:01
it looks because there are some hits where he hits a cymbal and his in his
20:06
kick drum and they're off with each other certainly doesn't make me want to pay in [ __ ] the same amount as what I'm
20:12
making I would I think you'd be I think it would be foolish to do that
20:23
I feel like I am in a little bit of a tough position and believe me I'm trying to challenge these lyrics every step of
20:30
the way if I'm not really careful about how I make my suggestion even if I know
20:37
I'm right if I'm not super careful about it like if I tell them I'll try this you
20:43
won't do it you have to understand I Sydney I'm sitting here all sorts of
20:48
lyrics are going through my head I've [ __ ] set it all already you know
20:56
what I mean I have [ __ ] used
21:02
every pain and feeling and and remorse
21:07
and I've used every reference I've done
21:13
it already
21:21
yeah but he would never see hear it in the chorus I'm still trying to get
21:26
through to you but I'm failing you act like I'm not even here my heart is breaking trying to see through your stare it looks right through me laugh
21:33
cuz it's all I can do to keep from going crazy
21:46
and a team from
22:13
you I try to and I'm still trying
22:37
dance
22:46
you say lie like I'm not even here and then later on you say pretend I'm not
22:53
there like hey okay you lie like I'm not even there and I pretend I'm not here
23:00
all right sort of pretend I'm not there I don't know why I thought about that but I just maybe it's maybe it's cool I
23:12
gotta keep my eye on this guy man oh nothing it's between me and the camera
23:18
oh you'll see in the DVD all right
23:26
why I don't know that there's anything wrong but I did
23:37
thoughts Prussians hate it
23:46
no dunking run I like the verse a it's got to be some differently you can't
23:51
have I mean it's exactly sounds like Alice in Chains so nobody can sing
23:56
harmonies in the song anymore because Alice in Chains [ __ ] did it it's like no one can start a [ __ ]
24:04
phrase with ya anymore because [ __ ] Alice in Chains did it you know how many [ __ ] bands have done it before
24:11
Allison chains ever did it's like come on do listen the two things that Mike
24:16
his two concerns about that particular song or that he thought that the
24:21
pre-chorus was to screamed out and he thought that the harmonies were too awesome changed that it just [ __ ]
24:28
kills me every [ __ ] person that heard those [ __ ] parts every person I
24:34
played those five [ __ ] songs for the parts that bother him are all the parts
24:39
that everybody was like what the [ __ ] when it [ __ ] comes out of yeah
24:48
everybody's just like oh god and I don't turn this off at this point
24:57
I like any melody put words and sing it down let's turn the thing in so that we
25:02
can make everyone happy by sometime the people around me will agree that I have
25:08
the ability to be a [ __ ] [ __ ] it is never okay to just leave a [ __ ]
25:14
news in the heart every other band I can [ __ ] think of look at [ __ ] helmet
25:21
taka taka dad got got got got twenty
25:26
[ __ ] six times it goes kaku kaku kaku and there's no [ __ ] lyrics whatsoever
25:32
and it goes through that whole [ __ ] thing it doesn't always have to have
25:37
words I have to change the psychology of it but he's not in a cooperative mood like
25:43
is it like [ __ ] necessary producer 101 that that even if what I'm doing is
25:49
perfectly fine you have to question it just to question it just to throw off the creative [ __ ] flow are you
25:55
[ __ ] [ __ ] alright so [ __ ] shut your [ __ ]
26:00
[ __ ] eating pie hole and play the goddamn chorus again it must suck to
26:07
have to deal with me boiling over [ __ ] out sorry let's just move on we don't
26:12
need to we already know what we're gonna need to [ __ ] that song there's memory from no need for this to get blown up no
26:18
this big [ __ ] thing no no what I'm saying is Lincoln said was I feel like the [ __ ] in here the vs. should stay
26:24
slamming that's all I [ __ ] was gonna do that Aaron and I are that are the probably well yeah we're probably there
26:31
too in the band that I've always butted heads the most I love how you listen how could you think that that's exactly you
26:37
said I was just talking about the riff how is that drums oh yeah
26:43
alright you didn't say I thought you said I'm talking about the riff though you just turned it into that John and
26:49
Aaron are oil and water I mean those guys one guy can say it's a nice day on
26:55
the other guy can go no it's not a slow picked [ __ ] totally drop down this
27:02
part yeah yeah it does yeah it does yeah it does but every section is something
27:09
no it doesn't it's never come to blows kind of surprised it hasn't fought I I
27:16
mean it's definitely that's a tough relationship well that [ __ ] song isn't going any
27:23
further because of what you just [ __ ] did that's why there needs to be
27:28
separation underneath there just there needs to be all I'm saying is no matter
27:34
what in a song you need to have dynamics you know that no totally guitar wise
27:40
drawing I quit on draw all needs so good song drops out just about nothing look at seven words
27:46
seven words has a song just drops out
27:52
it's you know it really it just comes down to personalities and then I think we both just have strong personalities
27:58
and I see that vers jebel that's not how
28:07
is everything that it's one [ __ ] song when we're back in the day record and
28:12
break the cycle you know John would start a song with a click and as soon as he started the song
28:18
he'd shut the click off and just to kind of have reference you know at the end of
28:26
it Josh and Ryan would turn the click back on just to see how close he stayed with the click and it was perfect
28:31
and he's playing this time around wasn't
28:37
you
28:54
still [ __ ] people that go on blabbermouth don't like me they just
29:04
don't very I do find that odd that people would have the time or energy or
29:10
take the time or energy to insult somebody they don't know about something they know nothing about there's nothing
29:19
that I could say to them with what they're saying under every single thing
29:24
that's been posted on blabbermouth one of which was me reopening my daughter's
29:31
school and and you know taking all that money out of my pocket to cover the budget and everything else in the
29:37
comments underneath were just shredding me another one was talking about me
29:45
going over to Kuwait to play for the troops and underneath it in the comments
29:50
people were just destroying me so they obviously don't like anything
29:59
that I've done and I don't understand why they waste their time hey don't
30:06
listen to it I need myself I can't stand reading any of the stuff
30:12
that people write about us I I don't I stopped I stopped a lot of years ago as
30:18
much as it tortures me I kinda need to know what the general consensus is so
30:24
from what I did read [ __ ] Staines has never put out a heavy record in their entire career the fact that we're
30:32
writing a heavy in-your-face record is laughable maybe I need to torture myself because I'm a creator than
30:40
we like creators are usually inspired by some
30:46
sort of torturous thing not everybody's going to like you you know not everything have nice things to say about
30:52
you that's life you know everybody has the right to form an uneducated opinion
31:00
but I have to stress the uneducated part why do you think was the first song that
31:06
we that we did um that we worked on I was actually stumped on that song
31:13
phases jazzy I've done a little that you
31:20
know when you take it out and you listen to the guitars the guitars to me sound
31:28
heavier than the melody so I think we should experiment with trying a melody
31:33
that sounds as heavy as at least the guitars do
31:50
Oh the origins of of the vocals for wannabe
31:57
it was that you're just a sellout turncoat pop star [ __ ] poser rock star
32:03
and that was that was that came out the
32:08
first time that we were sitting with that song and trying to come up with lyrics for and then we kind of back-burnered it and worked on some
32:14
other stuff and came back to it this is
32:23
it's frustrating right now because I'm sitting here trying to think of [ __ ]
32:28
heaviness and brutality and
32:37
I'm starting to hate all the series
32:49
in the middle of trying to come up with stuff for that an entire country song
32:56
like chord progression the melody the the lyrics came to me everything came to
33:03
me for the song that I have called 75 that couldn't have been more the polar opposite of what it was that I was
33:09
trying to focus on and and that's where my [ __ ] head was dragging me it's
33:16
nice I could hear the [ __ ] song and everything else and but I'm trying to focus on [ __ ] Staind and my [ __ ]
33:23
mind is going [ __ ] country country for the top of that I got pushed shoved shackled hold down salt chiseled away
33:30
pressure crush and then I wrote down a [ __ ] chord progression that I thought
33:37
was the right progression but it wasn't it starts on he and I couldn't have been more polar opposite than what it was
33:43
that I was thinking about and it was that interruptive
33:48
to have come doubt come out in its entirety I like it Sarika creativity
33:59
came out and just came out wrong vain happens just out of comic relief I
34:07
looked up and I was like I'm selling records you're basically cuz there's just no
34:13
other you know I can't I got to do it in this style or I can't really [ __ ]
34:19
call call it out full-on so we're the [ __ ] rollin with it I mean look if
34:24
you say you're in your mama's basement with the Shih Tzu peanut butter on your dick that mean you can't sing that that can only be wrapped or so you know or
34:32
you know scream raft and we all kind of
34:37
laughs because of just at the thought of the concept of it and the next thing you know the whole first verse was we're in
34:44
and the whole song just kind of fell together and we laughed and had a great
34:50
time the whole time we were writing it
34:57
and the left is giving you a rim job was it the plan for that song certainly
35:05
not but it just came out that way it's totally to the [ __ ] people that
35:11
have nothing better to do but sit in their [ __ ] mom's basement at [ __ ] 40 years old alternating between talking
35:18
[ __ ] on the internet and jerking off so [ __ ] sounds like me it's really
35:27
nothing I can do about it but for some reason I still like to torture myself with it sound again
35:41
my husband with the Shih Tzu inna butter on your big white hand going good with your left hand
36:10
the next one is it that subject matter right I mean it doesn't even matter what
36:21
just get to do or we had to I don't really [ __ ] even care here be honest with you well I should
36:30
still report the vocals so that elephant so what we are doing okay we can work
36:35
around what's there so interesting I have to write songs and
36:41
music that Aaron wants to sing on and if he doesn't like it and I do here I have with my you know
36:51
standing there and it is what it is I wouldn't expect you and Mike to always
36:56
agree on parts or like guitar player on a singer and a bank I always agree on everything anyway you shouldn't expect
37:02
I think that's unrealistic of you to sit back and think Mike should just always
37:09
agree with everything I do or not happening hey what keep not what I mean it's like I don't change it R is because
37:14
it and you gotta come up with this right maybe that's come on sometimes he's too
37:20
good sometimes he's got a bag you know it takes me who has nowhere near the
37:26
musical you know ability to dummy it up
37:31
a little bit I really respect Mike and what he brings to the table Mike's a great player man
37:37
Mike Mike and play stuff it would take me like three months to even get my fingers to be able to actually do that
37:44
stuff his fingers just amazing very particular about his writing and you
37:53
know he won't even let us hear it until he feels it's ready to go I would say hands down he's put in more time than
38:00
anybody on this record my influence might be a little bit responsible for
38:08
kind of keeping a leash on Mike over the years I hate to use the word formula but
38:14
there was definitely things that I started doing over the years and writing
38:21
records for the band that one night wrote the music for a tour manager dysfunction even some would break the
38:28
cycle that I wouldn't lock myself into doing certain things a certain way and
38:34
it seemed like when I didn't do that Aaron always wanted to go about everything had to be this way once we
38:41
got a record deal we kind of decided that the days of
38:48
of gratuitous guitar solos and things of that nature were
38:54
in the past well he definitely has some
39:00
good shredding abilities
39:28
that's crazy stuff they weren't always like mud shovel harmonics there was a
39:34
squeals and some just [ __ ] crazy but
39:42
maybe we should make it sound modern I
39:48
think it was almost a trademark on early mmm the bottom was one of the songs that
39:53
came from me just sitting around with Johnny and he's like God man you know he's make all these cool sounds on
39:59
guitar and I said I went gung gung I gonna go go and he's like yeah and it's
40:06
really we kind of started with that it's
40:15
a little thing I didn't crawl back in the day but a little bit it's a little bit different than the way I was doing
40:21
it then and just making some cool noises and you know try things a little bit
40:27
differently I guess Mike is the riff master and and I'm kind of the one that helps
40:35
figure out how to put it all together right I don't think either one of us have the
40:40
ability to deliver the final product that we deliver every time without each other to this day you know it makes me change
40:49
these rips and fort your talked about to other thread pointed out is that you have a guy that can actually sing not
40:54
many guys who can sing like that but use it I think here in Anza and it's a great
40:59
composer singer the only thing I could you know for weakness I I just wishes
41:06
work ethic was a little better some man during this process I was I was
41:12
working my ass off I had full-on solo tours going and a new
41:19
record that had just come out I was pulling me in every different direction I was filming for a TV show I was trying
41:28
to be a dad somewhere in the middle of all this and it was it was really tough
41:39
balancing all that and and I know that
41:48
that that caused a lot of of stress within the whole project that I probably
41:57
didn't necessarily need to be there but ironically ended up lending itself to
42:04
the project as far as lyrical content and and just
42:12
the energy in the room which we were able to capture kind of like we did on
42:18
dysfunction Aaron was continuing to
42:32
promote his solo record which was taking off and the you know that that out had
42:39
just come out in January of that year when he was starting toured with stained and so he had other obligations as is
42:49
appropriate for his solo project and so there was a lot of pressure um you know in the stained world
42:56
particularly on Aaron to finish this record while somebody had to agree on York on your side of things I mean they
43:03
as when you were negotiating this deal that wasn't it was it was Ted mattered a highway it was take these [ __ ] terms
43:11
or we're not going to give you the waiver to put this [ __ ] EP out it's
43:19
that simple that was the deal well yeah degree would
43:28
so obviously but that was the deal at that point it
43:33
was time for Aaron to take over and start writing lyrics and vocal melodies
43:40
and you know anybody who works on music can tell you the hardest part of any
43:46
song is the lyrical part and the vocal part melodic part of it you've got the
43:52
pressure from it being the last stained album in the contract you've got the pressure from a deadline and now all
43:58
that pressure is on your own shoulders and everybody's turning to Aaron and going when's it going to be soup I'm
44:05
just trying to do everything it's all I can do I have in the back of my mind
44:14
that this record does have to get done and after yesterday I realized that there is a financial incentive we have a
44:22
deadline we have to meet and if we don't then there's consequences you know I
44:28
think it goes beyond financial I mean is that a part of it of course it is it's not I don't think it's my job to tell
44:36
Aaron you know you should be doing these tours right
44:43
now I don't I don't know no I mean it's my opinion this records difficult to
44:48
make I you know he has his solo thing he's out playing gigs on weekends
44:54
his record just came out and it did really well you know I'm very happy for
45:00
I know something he's always wanted to do there's some great songs on there um but it makes making this record right
45:07
now tough uh you know if he has gigs on weekends or I I I almost think it's
45:18
anything else he can find other than doing you know I think some hunting show or something it's like well really this
45:25
band is allowed all that to happen yeah you know I am I'm usually pretty good about not showing my stress level what
45:32
I'm [ __ ] stressing the [ __ ] out right now we have them 20 minutes from being at the absolute maximum two hours and
45:38
the fact is is that I leave today and the fact is is that the biggest issue of the in over the last few days is that
45:44
you know they just want me home it's just want me there and and Here I am about to leave to go to the airport at 3
45:52
o'clock and I'm up here in the photo studio yeah a week and a half to write stuff and he came in you know like I did
45:59
gaining done we got to do it all now you know that kind of thing so a lot of
46:04
it was rushed she didn't put much thought or effort in her what was he doing he was doing his shows
46:13
and then his hunting thing or whatever through the doubt and the questioning
46:19
and the turmoil that was taking place
46:28
during the recording process at the end of it all I proved everybody wrong and I
46:41
did it I didn't have to cancel anything I didn't have to rework anything and I left my schedule just the way it was and
46:50
and really wrote some amazing melodies
46:57
and lyrics when
47:03
when everybody else that completely lost
47:19
blah
47:24
you're just and ever
47:30
you know it's so funny the Sun paper wing was originally I had this this riff
47:36
that sounded like it was off of Black Sabbath's paranoid
47:53
Oh free Faro you because the way the
48:01
song is you got to resist the temptation to to fall into that blues guitar trap
48:06
no because then it just it won't be cool we I remember Johnny came to the studio
48:11
one day and he's like everything Aaron sings over that just sounds bluesy can I go let's you know it's that we all love
48:18
this heavy cool riff at the beginning let's rewrite the verse we are gone
48:25
looks to me like you [ __ ] run in your [ __ ] garage
48:56
in my mind that section is what I wanted
49:01
this whole [ __ ] record to be like like [ __ ] like heavy like no denying
49:07
nope there's no [ __ ] way that you can [ __ ] say anything [ __ ] like in any
49:12
[ __ ] way about it he's just over there in the field
49:19
100 yards 150 years
49:34
[ __ ] wrong with you yeah he answered it oh yeah so it's pre
49:47
chorus verse pre-chorus verse pre-chorus
49:52
chorus Brittany Morris pre-chorus oh my
50:01
god the suggestion is made to you is going to be so [ __ ] unbelievably brutal
50:08
it's been so long since I've seen a [ __ ] good mosh pit at a [ __ ] stain show it's gonna [ __ ] be ridiculous
50:18
[ __ ] complete and total [ __ ] devastation where to go from that
50:25
[ __ ] intro to [ __ ] dad oh god oh god oh god oh
50:30
as that being the [ __ ] verse holy [ __ ] [ __ ]
50:42
not his [ __ ] bad-ass is bad ugh I know now I want to change everything around
50:47
and it's like and it's probably my favorite my favorite music that we've
50:52
had so far in the record and and it's tough when he just wants to change it
50:57
around and I think is like okay well if we're going to change it around then sing something great over it so I can
51:03
hear it it could go way beyond I try and make it a little bit more random yeah I
51:09
was thinking maybe the arrangements a little bit straight maybe if we flash it up a little bit through some time
51:15
changes maybe and some key changes in there yeah instead of instead of changing the key every measure let's try
51:21
and change the key every half measure or maybe every note that would be perfect every note a different key this part is
51:27
still heavy it's not being an old other hand away you're delivering all kinds of heavy you've got the punch in the gut heavy
51:33
you've got the drag across the ground heavy you've got the raging heavy you're
51:39
delivering every kind of heavy you're saying just give me one kind of heavy rail every night ups I'm saying there other
51:45
half there isn't a [ __ ] song in this collection of songs yet that is just raging [ __ ] heavy
51:51
like [ __ ] spleen or raw [ __ ] straight through it this is there isn't one this is a
51:57
smorgasbord of heavy I guess going down the [ __ ] once every [ __ ] will we
52:02
make that's a night thing
52:10
where it stands right now um I'd rather
52:17
not put it out I just think that it's not as good as it was and there's been a
52:24
lot of times that I felt that about things and I've not said anything but this one's so bad I have to say something I mean it's just it just
52:32
doesn't sound good to me the way it is did you ever one that I think that now
52:37
I'm gonna leave it the way you want it just so we all have a say-so one on
52:52
because I know how stubborn I can be I mean do I say this on camera that I
52:58
still think it could be better the other way I mean I love the chorus and I think the verses are good but I think the song
53:04
could be better that I mean that my opinion of that won't change I think
53:09
it's I think it's a good song I actually I do really like it but we'll never know what it would sound
53:15
like the other way so what am I going to do as somebody who understands music how could you sit there with a straight face
53:21
and try to argue what he's saying on his behalf to me as someone who's lawyers
53:27
looking for less parts to write so is less work to do you should be you should be enthusiastic that you don't want to
53:33
put a pre-chorus nasaw just one last part you got it right I'm thinking of not finishing why [ __ ] over the whole
53:41
thing yeah just bailing damn
53:48
yeah
53:54
first off I want to just check what date it is it's probably April Fool's Day
54:01
that wasn't even like a joke that could have been very sick yeah I was like a
54:08
big stretch I was like really like I go home you're bailing yeah
54:16
that's thinking about a [ __ ] kid I can't blame you bro hands down to Ma
54:25
burn your paper wings and lunch oh right
54:34
in the last two days it's amazing in 48
54:39
hours I wrote lyrics and recorded five songs so in the last 48 hours before
54:46
this record was due to be turned in I think there was still five or maybe even six songs that needed to be finished
54:54
lyrically and vocally and Aaron went away with the tracks out to the country
55:01
is just habit to clear his head and try to find you know some part of him that
55:07
could put these lyrics down in paper and he returned to the studio with a blank notebook was nothing there that came to
55:14
him and as he describes it in the last 24 hours
55:22
he sort of became an antenna for
55:27
something that was out there and channeled it where do you see the future stand I have
55:35
no idea time will tell what the future is you
55:40
know obviously our ahrens successful with what he's doing and I know he enjoys that that's why we said go do it
55:47
I mean I know you enjoy doing that you know I mean I will tell you that I I have plenty of songs I mean there's I
55:54
think over records worth of great material that we didn't use or touch on
55:59
this you know right now with some other really great ideas and our completed songs and there's there's a lot of you
56:06
know great stuff could we potentially stain stuff um and if it can't be
56:11
staying stuff it's going to be seeing all I got to use it somewhere else I would imagine so so my first choice no I
56:20
don't know I don't I don't think that that there's
56:26
any particular future or lack of future in stained we're about to put out
56:33
another record at the end of that record
56:39
and decide what it is what we're gonna do I mean when it's time to go it's time to go you know what I'm saying cuz you
56:47
know everybody knows when our biggest record wasn't it hasn't been downhill but it's been a slow trickle down from there that's fine I'm not going to cry
56:55
I'll look back with fond memories and been very successful and if it into
57:00
today I'd still be happy I think you know you'll probably see it in some of
57:05
the lyrics and the songs there we read it's been a long road it's definitely
57:10
affected everybody it has been a long road for them and I think that that's
57:18
the hardest part you know they're making their what seventh album
57:24
I understand and I sympathize with them they it is hard it is very stressful and
57:31
I was probably the hardest record that we've ever made at least for me but I
57:37
think ultimately led to us making a change as far as the drummer's go and
57:43
you know I guess not really seeing not
57:51
on the same page you know as far as you know with John and you know it's been 17
57:57
years it was I don't know it's something a weight on me for a long time
58:03
that decision that we had to make and you know look we tried to work things
58:10
out and sometimes things can't work out and you know it appears as of today
58:16
sitting right here that you know that's where it's going to stay it hit me when
58:22
John was out of them when we started practicing this week with somebody else I mean that was really you know and it's
58:28
been it's been pretty emotional even you know going through these rehearsals and leading up in we have our first show
58:34
tomorrow without him I think most of us were all fighting each other for the same common
58:41
goal which was to make the best [ __ ] record that we could make sometimes it's
58:47
just it takes conflict to to create the best thing that you can have
58:53
I think it's just a great return to form for the band I think it's the record
58:58
that one they wanted to make to that they needed to make and three they did
59:05
make and I think the fans are going to respect that fans going to appreciate that fans going to hear that when they listen to it and
59:12
they're all going to go out and see them in concert because they're going to want to hear these songs played live and I expect a nice long run from this out
59:17
very excited it's been a long hard road
59:22
to get this thing done looking back then I'm extremely proud of the way it came
59:28
out like this is you know like dysfunction 2011 you know it's uh I
59:34
think it's fresh I think it's for us and it kind of went back to where we where
59:40
we started
59:58
what's up man get away from me I think I might throw up
1:00:28
Oh
1:00:41
even though you should be at all your jokes
1:00:57
I call it
1:01:22
bring your bad boy
1:01:29
oh [ __ ]
