On Thursday, the president of Iran and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia spoke over the phone for the first time about the Israel-Gaza conflict.
According to two people familiar with Riyadh's thinking, Saudi Arabia is postponing plans to normalise relations with Israel, which is supported by the United States. This indicates that, as the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies, Riyadh is quickly reevaluating its foreign policy priorities.
The kingdom's engagement with Iran has also been prompted by the crisis. As Riyadh attempts to avert a wider upsurge in unrest around the region, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi made his first phone call to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The US-backed negotiations on normalisation with Israel, which were crucial for the kingdom to obtain what Riyadh views as the true benefit of a US defence alliance in exchange, will be delayed, the two sources informed Reuters.
Both Israeli and Saudi leaders had been claiming they were gradually heading toward a deal that could have changed the Middle East before Iran-backed Hamas started a conflict on October 7 by attacking Israel.
Until the most recent conflict, sources had stated that Saudi Arabia, the country that gave rise to Islam and is home to its two holiest sites, would not permit its pursuit of a US defence pact to be derailed, even if Israel did not make major concessions to the Palestinians in their bid for statehood.
However, ignoring the Palestinians would run the danger of infuriating Arabs in the area, since Arab media sources would show pictures of Palestinians lost in Israeli airstrikes.
Following more than 1,300 Israelis killed by Hamas fighters in their October 7 onslaught, Israel continued to strike Gaza, killing more than 1,952 Palestinians by Friday.
According to the first person who is aware with Riyadh's views, talks cannot continue at this time and, should they return, the subject of Israeli concessions to the Palestinians would need to take precedence. This suggests that Riyadh is still considering the notion.
Reuters emailed the Saudi authorities asking for comment, but they never heard back.
The Saudi reassessment brings to light the difficulties Washington faces in advancing Israel's integration in an area where the Palestinian cause continues to be a top Arab priority.
