Car Insurance FYI

Our definition of a bad day is when car thieves break in and drive it away in minutes.
Our definition of a REALLY bad day is when you report that theft to your insurance company and they refuse to pay you for your loss.
That’s what is happening to owners of many Kia, Hyundai, and other South Korean-built automobiles due to an intrinsic security fault which makes them particularly vulnerable to car thieves.
Blaze Media tells the story of a Tacoma, Washington man whose 17-thousand dollar Kia Sorento was there one minute and gone six minutes later. The anonymous victim admits he failed to do adequate research before buying the vehicle, last spring. At the time, he successfully transferred his Progressive policy to cover his new set of wheels. But six months later, they dropped him cold, citing the inherent risk factors of providing comprehensive insurance coverage.
Bottom line, unlike most other manufacturers, Kia and Hyundai do not install engine immobilizers with steering wheel locks at the factory. Immobilizers match key fobs to the engines, allowing the autos to start. And the steering wheel locks make it difficult for would-be thieves to perform their own, creative “work-arounds.”
The City of Chicago has filed a lawsuit against both South Korean car companies over their inadequate security systems which led to 88-hundred Kia and Hyundai thefts there during 2022 alone. Of all cars stolen that year in Chicago, 41 percent bore Kia or Hyundai logos, despite their representing only 7 percent of automobile ownership in the city.
If you own either of those two brands, you may wish to ask your insurance agent about your coverage. We’re providing you with this neighborly F.Y.I. to prevent your car’s showing up on a possible A.P.B.
