Saving a painting from horrific art restoration Fail!
This painting had been through the mill at least twice, rescued from a coal shed, cut into 4 pieces, rejoined and overpainted like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It needed some desperate help to try and take it back to the original if any of it was left. We tested and studied the surface and then found a solution strong enough to remove the overpaint but leave what was left of the original painting intact.
This small section approximately 12 inches by 10 inches took multiple days to remove. The whole painting which was around 6ft x 4ft took around 12 months to complete.
This was the time before I filmed my work so I only have a small selection of still images to share.
