Why do Art Restorers use UV light in Art Restoration

Checking for overpaint with my ultra violet lamp before I start to clean is invaluable in showing me where the damage is located and any historical retouching. This very large late 17th Century portrait has been lined in the past and will have been cleaned at least once so there will be past work that uncovers. More to come on this one.
