The grant will pay up to 75-percent of salary and benefits for eight police officers the city is looking to hire over the next three years. Adding officers will help Portage Public Safety move to 12-hour shifts for officers so they can handle more calls. Portage also plans to create patrols focused on high-crime and high-risk crash areas, and get police sergeants on the road to train and mentor more recruits.
