Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and the only dwarf planet located in the inner solar system. Discovered by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801, Ceres was initially classified as an asteroid before being reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006.

Ceres has a diameter of about 940 kilometers (580 miles) and is composed of rock and ice. Its relatively round shape and differentiated interior structure distinguish it from typical asteroids.
