Each time you enter a word or phrase into a search engine a lot of things happen behind the scenes in about 1/8 of a second.
The search engine uses algorithms to determine exactly what you're hunting for, adding in synonyms, anticipating your terms before you've even finished typing and offering corrections in case you've made a mistake.
