Suspect arrested after leading a multi-county police chase of an 18-wheeler

A driver has been taken into custody after leading law enforcement on a chase in an 18-wheeler in the Houston area Saturday afternoon, according to the Fort Bend County Pct. 1 Constable's Office.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said the chase started around 1:45 p.m. when the Patton Village Police Department received a call about an 18-wheeler driving erratically. It lasted about two hours.

MCSO said the chase started there, passed through Harris County and continued into Fort Bend County. They said HPD, Texas DPS and other agencies assisted in the chase.

"It's extremely dangerous," said Sgt. Jeff Campbell with the Roman Forest Police Department. "It's an 80,000-pound vehicle coming at people or driving down the road with disregard to people's safety."

The Fort Bend County Pct. 1 Constable's Office said the chase caused a crash at Falcon Landing Boulevard and Gaston Road. They said the driver was taken into custody near Fry Road and FM 1463 in Fulshear.

"He struck a couple of vehicles during the pursuit," Campbell said.

The sergeant said law enforcement used spike strips to pop the truck's tires.

"DPS also assisted with shooting out a few of the tires," Campbell said.

He said the driver had a controlled substance in the cab of the car. He was only carrying normal shipping items in the back. The driver is expected to face charges of felony evading and possession of a controlled substance and is being held at the Montgomery County Jail.

Campbell said both the truck and driver were out of Florida.

A witness told KHOU 11 that once the chase came to an end, the driver came out willingly and was taken into custody.

"They put him on the ground, cuffed him and put him in the police car," the witness said. "It was just a good show of force, all controlled, and I think everyone's one day safer. Thank God nothing more serious happened."
