Parasite Eve 2 (1999) was developed by Square and published by Square Electronic Arts

Out of all possible ratings: Terrible, Bad, Average, Good, Great....

My rating, based upon my playthrough experience, is: Average

Having never finished the first title, but playing it enough to know what Parasite Eve was, I can compare the two. Parasite Eve 1 was a RPG/Survival Horror title with horror elements mixed with turn-based RPG-style combat. It was a nice departure from the original RPG and Survival Horror formulas. Parasite Eve 2 changes things up a bit by adding real-time combat. One will feel however they wish about this, but I liked the turn-based combat days, but do not miss the random encounters that came along with it. Win some, lose some I guess...

Just like the first game, PE2 is graphically impressive for the PS1 era. The music and sounds were fairly standard, with nothing really standing out and either good or bad. The gameplay is more along the lines of an old-school RPG which works fine as a template for the rest of the game, but where the game screws up is the controls and the sometimes vague objectives, which is not uncommon for old RPGs. The controls are Resident Evil-style tank controls, which is fine when navigating the map, but when combat breaks out the controls will leave you frustrated until you get used to it, and even then they are still lacking. The story is typically wonky and is very symbolic of PS1-era RPGs. It wouldn't pass the smell test for today's gaming environment, but considering some of the newer games I've played lately, I prefer the nonsense of the PS1-era storylines to the woke bullshit we encounter now.

Parasite Eve is a title that has potential, and there aren't a lot of RPG/Horror hybrids out there, even today, so a reboot of the series may happen and there is legit talk of it returning. If that actually happens is another thing entirely. But, if you have the hardware to go back and enjoy some of these old games it may be worth your time doing so. If you have a PS3 and internet access, you can enter the PS# store and find around a hundred PS1 titles available to purchase, but you cannot buy them directly from the store. You need to go to Sony's website and sign into your account, add funds to your wallet, then go into the PS3 store and purchase and download your game. It's a hassle, I know, but if you want to play Parasite Eve or Dino Crisis that's what you have to do, unless you have a PS2 and want to shell out $$$ for a used copy.

Parasite Eve 2 is available on PlayStation.
