The green crab is thought to have arrived in the United States in the ballast water of ships from Europe. When ships discharge their ballast water, they can release invasive species into new environments. Green crabs are a major threat to native marine life. They are voracious predators and can outcompete native species for food and habitat. They can also damage seagrass beds, which are important for providing food and shelter for many marine animals.
