A once-in-a-lifetime encounter 🐋 By courageous divers “We were cruising with 6 whales and a pod of dolphins. The stuff dreams are made of. I was swimming along the back of the group with my gopro, trying to capture the whole scene. I dumped some air and sank beneath the surface to film the moment that the whales swam past our group of divers. Suddenly, one of the whales turned off course and headed straight towards me. I was honestly terrified at first. I froze completely and lowered the camera so I could take in the moment. In those few seconds time slowed right down and I felt absolutely no need to breathe. The eye contact was intense, and I could see every bit of detail on the whale’s belly. When I came back up for air I was pretty much speechless. One of the divers was calling out on the surface absolutely stoked. He’d been behind me with his camera at the perfect moment.” DISCLAIMER: “The whale approached of its own accord, from a group of 6 whales about 25m away. You can see the distance of the other whales in the video. Nobody duck-dived or swam towards the whale. The boat was over 100m away from us at this point. This was a super unusual scenario that cannot be planned for. The best we can do is work on our buoyancy control, develop our breath-hold, and be as respectful as possible to these beautiful animals.” 📍
