ANCIENT Chicken Ritual for atonement | HIGH HOLIDAYS in the streets of JEWISH BROOKLYN Ep 2

*Disclaimer: some might find this ritual disturbing, as it involves swinging live chickens*

Kapores are a special ancient ritual of swinging a chicken around a person's head as part of the period of atonement between the holiday of Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) and the holy day of Yom Kippur. Many Jews don't use chickens for kapores, and rather use money instead, but in Hasidic Williamsburg, there is always a lively chicken scene.

After the ritual, the chickens are supposed to be given to charity. But since donating chickens is very inconvenient, the chickens are processed in the regular Jewish slaughtering ritual and the proceeds go to charity.

Today we'll have a stroll through the neighborhood during the chicken ritual and see what it's like.
