On February 19, 2016, President Barack Obama made a historic phone call to the International Space Station (ISS), becoming the first sitting U.S. president to directly communicate with astronauts while in space. During the call, President Obama spoke with NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Tim Kopra, as well as British astronaut Tim Peake of the European Space Agency, who were aboard the ISS at the time.
