Maya Kowalski was diagnosed with a rare and debilitating condition called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which causes intense and chronic pain in the limbs. Her parents, Beata and Jack, tried everything to help their daughter, including an experimental treatment with ketamine, a powerful anesthetic that could temporarily relieve her agony.

But their nightmare was just beginning. When they took Maya to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for a flare-up of her symptoms, they were accused of abusing and neglecting their child by doctors who did not understand or believe in her diagnosis. Maya was taken away from her parents and placed in foster care, where she suffered even more.

This is the true story of Maya Kowalski, a brave and resilient girl who fought for her life and her family against a system that failed them.
