The director of Gaza's Indonesian hospital told Al-Jazeera on Tuesday that at least 50 Palestinians were killed and 150 were wounded in Israeli air strikes on the camp, which is the largest of the Gaza Strip's eight refugee camps.

"There was a very senior Hamas commander in that area, an Israeli army spokesperson told CNN.

"His elimination was carried out as part of a wide-scale strike on terrorists and terror infrastructure belonging to the Central Jabaliya Battalion, which had taken control over civilian buildings in Gaza City," the military added, referring to the targeting of Ibrahim Biari, the commander of Hamas' Central Jabaliya Battalion.

The strike caused the collapse of Hamas's underground infrastructure, killing several other members of the terror group, an IDF spokesman later confirmed.
