I caught this mudpuppy ice fishing this weekend, a mudpuppy as we know them in Wisconsin are also known as waterdogs, they are amphibians called Necturus, and are a species of aquatic salamanders in the Eastern United States and Canada. They have been known to get as large as 17" long but most average 8" to 13". We catch them in the bay of Green Bay on Lake Michigan in both the summer and winter, they are a nuisance to most fisherman. Mudpuppies do not have air breathing lungs, but can walk on land quite well as you will see. Their diet consists of crayfish, snails, insect larvae, worms, and small fish. This mudpuppy was released unharmed, mudpuppies are endangered in most states as there are not many there, but not Wisconsin we have an abundance of mudpuppies in our lakes, rivers and swamps.
