Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which one person seeks to make another person doubt their own perceptions, memories, or sanity. This manipulation is often done to gain control, undermine the victim's confidence, or make them more pliable. Gaslighting tactics can include denying facts, trivializing the victim's feelings, and presenting false information to create confusion and self-doubt. The term "gaslighting" is derived from the 1944 film "Gaslight," in which a character attempts to drive his wife insane by making her doubt her reality through deceptive tactics. Gaslighting can occur in personal relationships, workplaces, or other social settings and is considered a form of emotional abuse.
