Global National: Oct. 30, 2023 | Israel's assault pushes deeper into Gaza
Israel's military is pushing deeper into the Gaza Strip, aiming to wipe out Hamas and rescue more than 200 hostages still being held by the militants. Mike Armstrong looks at the growing desperation among civilians in Gaza, why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won't agree to a ceasefire, the warnings from the United Nations to Israel about its response to Hamas, and why the UN closed four aid distribution centres in Gaza, despite supplies being badly needed.
Violence from the brutal Israel-Hamas conflict is spilling over into the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which is home to more than two million Palestinians, as well as more than 700,000 Jewish-Israeli settlers allowed in by Israel. But Palestinians, the United Nations, and most of the international community consider their settlements illegal. Daniele Hamamdjian speaks with West Bank residents about their fears of the region becoming another war front in a wider conflict and meets an Israeli rabbi trying to stop injustices against Palestinians.
A riot erupted at the airport in Makhachkala in the Russian republic of Dagestan, which has a majority Muslim population. A mob stormed the building, looking for Jewish passengers. Redmond Shannon reports on the worrying rise in antisemitism and who Russian President Vladimir Putin is blaming for the mob at the airport.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is calling for "humanitarian pauses" in Israel's war on Hamas, and says foreign nationals and hostages need to be let out of the Gaza Strip, while essential aid should be allowed in. Mackenzie Gray reports on the amplifying calls for a ceasefire.
Plus, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing to "crush and destroy" Hamas, it's unclear what will happen next. Dawna Friesen speaks with former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak about how long Israel's ground invasion of Gaza could take, the risks of hostages being killed in the process, how he thinks Netanyahu and the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have lost the "trust of the people" after Hamas' surprise attack on Oct. 7 and the path to peace in the Middle East.
