The Prophet's Experience

What was it like to receive a prophecy from God? How did you, as a prophet, know that you were delivering it the way it was given by God. Some of those were long and complicated. How can we, as a people 2000 years later or more, know that the prophecies we read are God's words and not the prophet's words?
