The New Covenant

All my Christian life, I have heard about the New Covenant. At first, I thought it was just the New Testament. Later, I learned that there was a first covenant and that that covenant was replaced by a new one through the work of Jesus on the cross. I was not sure exactly what either of these covenants were about.

A covenant is simply an agreement between two parties. Sometimes we call that a contract or an agreement, which lays out the terms and conditions of the agreement and clearly spells out the responsibilities and benefits of each party in the agreement. The old covenant was between God and the nation of Israel, while the new covenant is between God and Christians.

So, what is this new covenant that is so important to we Christians? For that matter, what was the old covenant? How do these 2 covenants differ and how are they alike? What is in it for me and why should I care?
