Update on Amara after her stay at the veterinarian and being down in the barn for 10 hours Ep.62
Episode 62
We rescued another Belgian Draft Horse from Bowie Texas Livestock, lot# 9937 a mare, who we named Amara (Pronounced ah-MAR-ah). From the livestock yard video it looked like she had some injuries with a large black spot on her back side. When I called Bowie I was told it was from rubbing in the trailer during transport. When we arrived to pick her up her situation was much worse than we expected. She had abrasion all over her left side and most of the skin on the left side of her face had come off. The black spot on her back side was definitely not from rubbing in the trailer as you could see under the skin. We got her to the vet on the way home and got her the medical attention she needed.
Last week we had an emergency situation with Amara. I went out to the barn to feed everyone and Amara was laying down and would not get up. Any horse owner knows that a horse that will not get up on their own is a very serious situation. When Amara wouldn't stand up we waited until Dr. Waggoner arrived to help us get her rolled over to her other side. Once we got her rolled over she stood up on her own. After she was standing for a bit she tried to lay back down. We got her down to the animal hospital and Dr Waggoner treated her for mild colic. Dr Waggoner thought that she went down in the first place because she wasn't feeling well and not because of on issue with her leg. She did stay at the vet for two day to get fluids for dehydration and for some additional tests to be ran. Amara has a stiff neck, probably from her original accident so she did receive laser therapy on her neck to help with the pain.
When she gets stronger we will be bringing her back to MVP for some chiropractic adjustments. Lots more to come, but this is a quick update on Amara.
