Episode 64
Back in April, after we said goodbye to Lucky, we rescued 2 more Belgian Draft Horses from Bowie Texas Livestock. A mare and a gelding. If you don't know Lucky's story...he was rescued from Kemp, Texas through Last Chance Direct Ship Horses and was saved from shipping to slaughter.
Lucky had a horrific eye injury and was in serious need of medical attention. After multiple vet visits and tests we found out that Lucky's eye injury was actually a tumor. The tumor had ruptured his eye. Our plan was to have the tumor removed but when we arrived for surgery Dr. Brown from the Texas Tech University of Veterinary Medicine found additional tumors in other areas of Lucky's body. The cancer had spread and Lucky was suffering and had been suffering for some time. We decided that Lucky's suffering had gone on long enough and we chose to say goodbye. That was the hardest decision we had to make. If you haven't seen the lives of Lucky, I will post a link below.

That night when we got home from the vet, Cory happened to go to Bowie's website and there were two Belgians posted and their ship dates were just around the corner. The foundation had raised money to pay for Lucky's surgery, since the surgery didn't happen we decided to use the funds raised to save these two beautiful healthy horses. This video is about everything they have been up to since we brought them back to our farm. Welcome (officially) to the family Lena and Dutch!

The one item WE always need is FEED! If you would like to send a gift/donation of feed (Alfa Pro, hay, etc) to the horses you can send that through our local feed store, HF & C Amarillo. HF&C Amarillo has offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift/donation of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo and they will add the gifts to our account. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase per pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag by the pallet. WE go through about 3-1/2 bags per day to feed all 13 horses (175 pounds per day). We also purchase square bales of coastal hay from HF&C. We use 3 bales per day to feed all the horses. Square bales of hay are $16.75 each.

Thank you to everyone that has sent us gifts of Alfa Pro! The horses love Alfa Pro and we truly appreciate the bags/pallets you have sent to us!
