NASA trained their Apollo astronauts out on the lava fields in 1964, bringing tourism to the forgotten area.
Built along an 1860s wagon road, at an elevation of 5,187 feet, this lookout tower was built by William N Park in 1935. Constructed from lava rocks which flowed from the Yapoah cone which erupted over 2,600 years ago.
The lookout tower was named after Dee Wright. A trail builder, guide and packer for the US Forest Service, who passed away the previous year without seeing its completion.
