The Great Fire of Rome, which occurred in AD 64 during the reign of Emperor Nero, was a catastrophic event with a lasting impact on the city.

The fire began on the night of July 18 or 19 and continued for several days, its cause still a subject of historical debate. It inflicted widespread destruction, consuming many buildings, including homes and public structures, rendering numerous citizens homeless.

Emperor Nero's response to the fire is contentious. While he returned to Rome from Antium and initiated relief efforts, some accounts portray him negatively, suggesting he may have fiddled while Rome burned.

Nero blamed Christians for the fire, leading to their persecution. The fire prompted urban planning improvements, including wider streets and more fire-resistant building materials, which contributed to Rome's reconstruction.

Accounts of the Great Fire come from Roman historians like Tacitus, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio, but their writings were produced years after the event, raising questions about accuracy and potential biases.
