BEST OF: Driftwood - When You Gonna Heal Me

A student college band that was a force of nature. I saw Rita and Mags performing together at the university Irish bar and was blown away by their harmonies. After a few beers, I plucked up the courage to talk to them and asked if they would be interested in putting a band together. Over the next two years, I wrote songs for Driftwood, we rehearsed, gigged, were featured on local radio and became a well-known band on the university campus and around the music scene of Sunderland, England. We sadly split up in 1995 after two years, owing to the fact that studies had ended and the real world was beckoning for everybody.
What is left are some great demo recordings, fortunately organised by Mags. I have some of these recordings and this song here “When You Gonna Heal Me” is one of them, recorded onto a DAT tape machine in Rita's student house living room in 1995. Out of all the bands and solo projects I have done, it is Driftwood that hurts the most. The band really could have been big, we were young, great-looking, cool, very talented musicians and had the songs. We had everything but unfortunately the planets weren't aligned for us.
With this audio recording, what I have done here is simply hacked in with a smidge of noise reduction, getting rid of some of the tape hiss. And used a bit of mastering in the 2013 Magix Movie Maker software that I have, very basic but it sounds okay. Justice will be done though for these three darlings of my past. AI is on the march and the possibilities for the audio quality on Driftwood's songs will be mind-blowing. It would be nice for the world to discover what they missed back then but at least sonically justice will be done.
