Lions and hyenas are competitors. They hunt the same prey, scavenge the same remains, and steal food from each other. They also chase each other and kill each other's young.
When a lion is surrounded by hyenas, it may:
Charge into the clan Identify the dominant female and break her back Bite the hyena in a vital area, killing it Retreat rather than risk injury Male lions have been seen charging into a group of 10 hyenas. However, this doesn't mean that a male lion could win if 10 hyenas were actually trying to fight it.
