“Scoffers in the Last Days”
29th In our series the Epistle of 2nd Peter

I. The Folly of Materialism - Psalm 14:1
* A. Prophecy regarding the Last Days - 2 Peter 3:1-3
* 1. Both the O.T. Scriptures and the N.T. Apostles give the same warning
* a. The Last Days will multiply scoffers
* b. They are dishonest about the true motivations for their philosophical position
* c. They are actually motivated by their own lusts
* 2. Why does God make this warning in both the Prophets and the Apostles?
* a. As a sign of the times - Matthew 24:3-5 
* b. So we will know how we ought to live Matthew 10:16-23
* B. The one doctrine they hate above all is the 2nd Advent of Jesus Christ - 2 Peter 3:4

II. A Biblical Understanding of Scorn and Mockery
* A. At root it is lawlessness, the violation of God’s law, for all sin is lawlessness - 1 John 3:4
* 1. A fool hates true knowledge Proverbs 1:22, 
* 2. Commits sexual immorality 6:32; 7:7-12, 
* 3. Enjoys wicked schemes 10:23, 
* 4. Is quick-tempered 12:16, 
* 5. A fool is proud in his speech 14:3, 
* 6. Is deceitful 14:8, 
* 7. Mocks at sin 14:9, 
* 8. Spurns a parent’s discipline 15:5, 
* 9. Despises his mother 15:20 
* B. The path of wisdom 
* 1. The disciple receives the very nature of God - 2 Peter 1:4
* 2. They have the mind of Christ - 1 Corinthians 2:16
*  3. They relying on the Holy Spirit’s indwelling power
* 4. They reject folly so their thoughts please the Lord
* 5. They make decisions that glorify God and enrich the lives of those around them
