Concept trailer for the highly anticipated and now confirmed Shrek 5 movie. The long-awaited fifth installment was set up during the ending of Dreamworks' Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

After over a decade of being in development, Shrek fans might have thought they wouldn’t get any more Shrek 5 updates. It might be closer to becoming a reality than fans think.

Head of Illumination Chris Meledandri confirmed Shrek 5 is in development as part of a wide range of announcements and teases. One of the more interesting tidbits for Shrek fans is that he seemingly teased that Eddie Murphy's desired Donkey spin-off movie could happen, saying that the character could carry their own movie “Without question.”

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was one of the most surprising films of 2022, following up on a decade-old spinoff and revitalizing the Shrek franchise in the process. But the result was apparently far from a foregone conclusion.

Perhaps the most shocking moment of the entire film was the final scene, in which Puss, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito found themselves sailing the ocean towards the magical kingdom of Far, Far Away as the iconic Shrek theme swelled. Even in a film landscape bursting at the seams with cinematic universes, the implication of Shrek's return still managed to surprise audiences.

The original cast have been ready and waiting to continue the further adventures of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the rest of the colorful inhabitants of the Kingdom of Far Far Away.

Mike Myer's comments on the subject are great news for Shrek 5, and though they don't provide a release date for the new Shrek movie, they at least indicate his enthusiasm for returning to the franchise "every year" if he could. On top of Murphy's and Meledandri's enthusiasm to get the original voice cast back together, this spells good news for longtime Shrek fans.
